6-year registration issued for $5 to out-of-state fleet trailers,
prorated for those registering in years 2 through 6.
Ch. 589 E 10/1/1975 doubled fee to $10.
Ch. 481 E 10/24/1977 changed term to 8 years, effective 1980.
Ch. 227 E 9/14/1979 added 12-year term for new trailers.
By 1983, variable terms seem to have been allowed, but laws through
1991 still provided only for 8 or 12 year terms. Large numbers of plates
expired in 1988 and 1992, but we haven't seen significant bumps in 1996
or 2004 plates that should have followed.
1993 Ch. 683 E 1/1/1995: "A person registering a semitrailer in
accordance with this section may register a semitrailer for fewer
than 5 years only to maintain a common expiration date for a fleet."
3-year term added c.1989. 7-digit plates first reported in ALPCA JUN-95.
As of 2016, terms ranged from 5 to 12 years.
Currently, terms are 3, 5, 10, 12 or 20 years.
20-year registration option began 1991 (Ch. 422 E 6/20/1991) for
those registering 1,000 or more trailers, at a $200 fee.

25-year registration option began 1999 (Ch. 776 E 7/9/1998) for those
registering 30,000 or more trailers; these must expire 12-31.
Minimum lowered to 20,000 2020 (Ch. 397 E 9/19/2019). Earliest seen "12-31-23".
